De Jaen recalls her life in Seattle's Central District. She describes her Sephardic family background, and explains the character of her neighborhood. There are detailed descriptions of her elementary school, high school, cliques, coffee klatches, the community library, Bikur Holim synagogue, and various businesses. She describes daily life, household chores, children's pastimes of the 1930s and 1940s. De Jaen stresses the idea of community. She also relates her memories of Japanese evictions during WWII, and the changes to the community after that war.
